The Diet Books that Got it Right...Scientifically
I teach college cell biology, and, as an assignment, I require my students to read one of three books to help them understand exactly what our body does with food and how what we feed our body affects our metabolism.
The books that they are allowed to choose from include: The Five Forces of Wellness, Ultrametabolism and Ultraprevention.
Books That Can Change Your Life
Upon completing this assignment, students have told me that these books have changed their lives. I feel the same way.
Ultraprevention and Ultrametabolism and the new Five Forces of Wellness are true 'Diet Books'. Once you understand how your body uses different foods, vitamins and minerals, you then have the power to effectively control your health and your weight.
These books are astounding! See for yourself.
CELL BIOLOGY METABOLISM PROJECT
The following is the actual metabolism assignment that I give to my HCR 118 Cell Biology Class. You might find the assignment helpful in organizing your thoughts as you read one of these spectacular books.
ASSIGNMENT
Relating Cell Biology to Your Life
It is important for you to always keep in mind the “big picture” when studying cell biology (or anything for that matter). Class material will be easier for you to understand if you are able to conceptually put it all together into something that makes sense and has meaning to you. That is the purpose of this project, to help you relate cell biology to your health and to Health Science in general.
Three Options
Since learning is not a “one-size-fits-all” type of endeavor, I am going to give you a choice. You must do ONE of the three assignments presented here.
OPTION 1
Macromolecules and Exercise
1. Write down EVERYTHING you consume for a 24 hour period.
2. For each item you consume identify:
a. Total calories
b. Grams of: Carbohydrates, Fiber, Proteins, Fats (saturated and unsaturated)
3. Calculate the calories you consumed from each macromolecule. Explain why some macromolecules may provide more energy than others. Explain what the body does with each of the molecules you consume.
4. Visit the FitnessCenter on campus. Make an appointment with the trainer and ask them to show you aerobic vs. anaerobic exercise. Perform the exercise (if you are physically capable) and record your physiologic response (heart rate, respiration, muscle fatigue). Explain these responses and then compare and contrast the two levels of exercise based on these indicators.
OPTION 2 & OPTION 3
There are two popular books, by Harvard educated and affiliated MDs, that I think are extraordinarily important for those entering the filed of Health Care. The books provide a scientific and entertaining explanation of how our bodies work and how the choices we make in diet and lifestyle impact our health on a cellular level.
I think that reading one of these book will not only help you improve your understanding of cell biology, but may also improve your health and increase your effectiveness as a health care provider.
These Options relate to reading one of these books and writing a report based on the criteria below.
Option 2
Ultraprevention. (2003) Mark Hyman MD & Mark Liponis MD. ISBN#: 978-0-7434-4883-3
Part I of the book
For each of the 7 Myths of Modern Medicine:
1. Summarize the myths. (This does not mean just write down the title of the myth...EXPLAIN it.)
2. Explain what you found most interesting or surprising about what you learned.
3. Explain how it relates to something that we have studied so far this semester in HCR 118.
Part II of the book
For each of the Five Forces of Illness:
1. Summarize the Force of Illness.
2. Explain what you found most interesting about what you learned.
3. Explain how it relates to something that we have studied so far this semester in HCR118.
Option 3
Ultrametabolism. (2006) Mark Hyman MD. ISBN#: 978-0-7432-7255-1
Part I of the book
For each of the 7 Myths That Make You Gain Weight:
1. Summarize the myths. (This does not mean just write down the title of the myth...EXPLAIN it.)
2. Explain what you found most interesting or surprising about what you learned.
