"Doing what little one can to increase the general stock of knowledge is as respectable an object of life, as one can in any likelihood pursue."

- Charles Darwin

Science Prof Online (SPO) is home to straightforward, easy to understand explanations. It's science for the rest of us.

The site is continuously growing to provide a variety of resources on a wide range of 'Science 101' topics.

SCIENCE PROF ONLINE MAIN TOPIC AREAS

Cell Biology

All forms of life is made from these tiny units. And, believe it or not, there are only two main types of cell; prokaryotes and eukaryotes. (You are a eukaryote. The bacteria hitching a ride on your body are prokaryotes.) This topic area explores cells and cellular processes that are the common denominator shared by all living things.

Also, see the Virtual Cell Biology Classroom. This virtual classroom provides support materials for an actual introductory college cell biology class. A great place for anyone interested in biology to find useful info.

Chemistry

Inorganic chemistry is the science of substances that do not contain carbon-hydrogen bonds; chemicals not made by living organisms. Organic chemistry is the stuff of life. Without the carefully orchestrated chemical reactions that take place in our cells, all life would come to a screeching halt.

Evolution

How does evolution work? What is the relationship between natural selection and evolution? Was Darwin the first to come up with the idea of evolution? Find out here! This topic area contains links to articles on several subtopics of evolutionary theory.

Genetics

This branch of biology basically examines how traits are passed down over generations; the study of heredity and the nucleic acid (DNA) that is the genetic code.

This SPO topic area includes the basics of genetics, such as the raw materials (nucleotides and nucleic acids) and processes (mitosis and meiosis).

Immunology

The human body has many lines of defense against potential pathogens (bad guys, such as bacteria and viruses, that can cause disease). Find out more about your own personal army of cells and chemicals that are on the job, 24/7 protecting your bod!

Microbiology

This relatively new science began with the erroneous belief in spontaneous generation (abiogenesis) and matured into the germ theory on which today’s understanding of infectious disease is based. This link will take you to a series of articles covering the history of microbiology, infectious disease, eukaryotic microbes, bacteria, viruses, viroids and prions.

Also, see the Virtual Microbiology Classroom. This is the site used to provide support materials to an introductory college microbiology class, but it is a great place for anyone interested in micro to find useful information.

For additional Microbiology information,go to the online magazine Suite101 Microbiology. This interactive website provides articles, interactive comment sections, blogs and discussions.
